Food ordering – when does it become an addiction?

Why do people order food? What is so enticing about the food that just can’t be avoided? When did people start having a fascination with food that was brought from outside? How has it been beneficial or disastrous?

I remember the excitement on the last day of school exams. It meant that I could buy 2 packets of lays as a way of celebration of exams being over. I remember the coins I used to save to be able to get chips. It slowly turned into me saving the change and tip toeing out of the house to go and buy chip packets. I also recall once or twice when I had taken coins from my father’s pockets without him knowing to do so. What determined my journey from here to a college girl who orders from swiggy and zomato almost everyday (sometimes twice a day)? You might think what is wrong with that? Some people just can’t control. Why crib about lack of control? The issue arises because most people who eat because of lack of control enjoy the food. Then why am I distressed? After some reflection, I feel as though this fascination with food has transformed into an unhealthy habit. Initially, I felt extremely upset if I was denied outside food or I didn’t get an opportunity to sneak in my order at home. But now, as I live alone, there is a freedom of ordering. But this food does not give me happiness anymore. I turn to swiggy as a consequence of boredom. Once I am on the app, I must order. Even if I don’t feel like having any of the food from hundreds of restaurants around, I still order.

It’s not uncommon to experience conflicting emotions when it comes to food choices. On one hand, we may crave and desire certain foods, while on the other hand, we might be aware of the potential negative consequences, such as feeling upset or experiencing regret afterwards.

It’s important to recognize that everyone has their own unique relationship with food. For some, eating certain foods may bring joy and satisfaction, while for others, it may lead to guilt and disappointment. It’s essential to find a balance that allows you to enjoy your meals without feeling overwhelmed by negative emotions.

One approach could be to practice mindful eating. This involves being fully present and aware of your thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations while consuming a meal. By paying attention to your body’s signals of hunger and fullness, you can make more conscious choices about what and how much you eat. Mindful eating can help cultivate a healthier relationship with food, as it encourages you to savor and appreciate each bite, rather than rushing or overindulging.

Additionally, exploring alternative options or substitutions can be a helpful strategy. If you’re concerned about the potential negative impact of certain foods, you could consider finding healthier alternatives that still satisfy your cravings. There are many recipes and resources available that offer nutritious versions of favorite dishes, allowing you to enjoy delicious meals without the guilt.

Ultimately, it’s crucial to be kind to yourself and practice self-compassion. Remember that food is meant to nourish and fuel our bodies, but it’s also a source of pleasure and enjoyment. Finding a balance that works for you, both physically and emotionally, is key. And if you do end up indulging in something that brings temporary happiness but also triggers negative emotions, try to learn from the experience and use it as an opportunity for growth and self-reflection.
